SUMMARY:14. Advanced Methods in HIV Surveillance
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nDescription\nIn spite of the improvements in the quantity of data and quality of HIV strategic information systems\, substantial efforts are needed in the countries to implement a fully functioning system. That in particular relates to the need to improve HIV incidence\, morbidity\, and mortality surveillance and to more effectively use the data.HIV surveillance is broad in terms of the content and operations due to the complexity of the HIV epidemics. In addition to the key surveillance components\, comprehensive HIV strategic information systems have a number of data sources in place that provide information that are crucial for planning  timely and effective HIV response. These are: \n \n \n\nincidence-based HIV surveillance\nsurveillance of opportunistic infections (such as tuberculosis) and diseases transmitted in similar ways as HIV (particularly hepatitis B and C) and STIs\nCD4 T-lymphocyte surveillance which monitors trends in immunosuppression associated with HIV infection\nsurveillance of AIDS-related mortality\nsize estimates of key populations\nprogrammatic data sources (VCT\, PMTCT\, data on prevention services)\nHIV patient monitoring data\nsurveillance for antiretroviral resistance\n\n \n  \n  \n \nLearning objectives\n \n  \n \nThe aim of the course is to describe the components of an advanced strategic information system\, in particular new developments in HIV incidence-based surveillance and assays\, HIV cascade analysis and surveillance of HIV drug resistance. \n \n \nDuring practical part of the course\, participants are expected to develop a protocol for an advanced component of HIV surveillance. Participants are encouraged to develop protocols that will be used in their own countries. \n \n  \n \nKey topics of the course are:\n \n \n\nIncidence-based HIV surveillance\nHIV testing and prevention data sources \n HIV drug resistance surveillance\nHIV patient monitoring systems and cohort analysis\nTreatment and prevention HIV and viral hepatitis cascades \nGeographic information systems in HIV surveillance\nPopulation size estimation\n\n \n  \n  \n \nTeaching Methods\n \n \nThe course consists of lectures\, presentation of case studies\, exercises and group work. The course is designed to provide participants with practical skills and knowledge in development of a more effective and comprehensive HIV strategic information systems in their countries. \n \n  \n \nTarget Audience\n \n \nEpidemiologists\, public health professionals\, social scientists \n \n  \nThis course was held in:\n\nDubrovnik\, Croatia \n
