SUMMARY:15. HIV Data Synthesis and Data Use
DESCRIPTION: \nDescription\nThe aim of the course is to introduce participants to the methods of HIV programme evaluation\, ranging from study designs that can be used to assess the impact of certain interventions (cohort studies\, RCTs) and HIV data synthesis\, to modeling the impact of interventions. HIV data synthesis or  triangulation is broadly defined as synthesis and integration of data from multiple sources through collection\, examination\, comparison and interpretation. It is done by using quantitative and qualitative data analysis and interpretation of data coming both from HIV and other surveillance (e.g.\, sexually transmitted infection) and programme-based sources and vital statistics registries. \n \n \nOne of the key purposes of HIV data synthesis is to enable more effective data use. The course reflects on three major areas related to use of data: (I) for planning HIV interventions; (II) for programme monitoring and evaluation; (III) for advocacy. \n \n \nThe course will further focus on the use of HIV modelling in programme evaluation\, in particular cost-effectiveness analysis.  Lectures will cover basic approaches in mathematical modelling of HIV epidemics in different settings and how it can be used for programme planning and intervention evaluation. \n \n \nPresentations will also outline the use of triangulation in assessing  coverage and impact of prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) programmes and explore  processes and criteria for validation of elimination of MTCT of HIV.  \n \n \nThrough exercises participants will acquire skills in data interpretation and gain better understanding of the process of programme evaluation. Exercises illustrate the most common challenges in data use\, such as those arising from the errors in data collection methods\, design of surveys and the ways data have been analysed and presented in the reports.    \n \n \n \nLearning objectives\n \n \nThe course aims to provide participants with the practical skills needed to perform HIV programme evaluation  and enhance their skills in the use and interpretation of data. \n \n \n \nKey topics of the course are: \n \n \n\nOverview of the steps involved in conducting HIV data synthesis and triangulation\nUnderstanding how completeness & quality affect data interpretation\nUnderstanding how errors in data collection and analysis influence data interpretation\nUse of data synthesis and other study designs (sentinel surveillance\, cohort data\, DHS\, modeling) in assessing the impact of PMTCT programmes\nCriteria\, indicators and processes for validation of elimination of MTCT of HIV\nBasic principles of HIV epidemics modeling and cost-effectiveness analysis as evaluation tools\n\n \n \n \nTeaching Methods\n \n \nThe course consists of lectures\, case studies and exercises. Participants are expected to develop data synthesis or evaluation proposals for their countries and present them on the last day of the course. Participants can also develop proposals for assessing the effectiveness of PMTCT programmes in their countries. \n  \n \n \n \n \nTarget Audience\n \n \nEpidemiologists\, social scientists\, public health professional       \n  \nThis course was held in:\n\nZagreb\, Croatia (several times)\nseveral cities in Ukraine\nDenpasar\, Indonesia                                                                                                      \n\n
